Zambiaโs Copper Queens have taken their message of determination and empowerment beyond the football pitch, inspiring female employees at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) during a visit to the companyโs operations in Chingola.
The delegation, which included national team captain Barbara Banda, Racheal Kundananji and other Copper Queens players, alongside members of the technical bench and Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) representatives, engaged with KCM employees on the importance of discipline, teamwork and perseverance in achieving success.
During the visit, the players toured underground operations at Nchanga Mine, visited Nchanga Upper Secondary School and interacted with female employees, creating an opportunity to exchange experiences on leadership, professional growth and breaking barriers in traditionally male-dominated industries.
KCM Deputy Chief Executive Officer Satish Kumar commended the Copper Queens for their performances on the international stage and their influence on young girls across the country.
โThe Copper Queens have continued to inspire the nation through their resilience, determination and outstanding performances on the international stage. You are role models for young girls, demonstrating that with discipline, hard work and commitment, dreams can be achieved,โ he said.
Kumar added that the values required to succeed in football also apply in the workplace, where teamwork, commitment and accountability contribute to individual and organisational performance. He further reaffirmed Vedantaโs commitment to community development, youth empowerment and initiatives that promote national pride.
Speaking during the engagement, Kundananji encouraged the women to believe in their abilities and remain confident even when faced with criticism.
โEverybody can believe in you, but it only takes you to achieve what you want. Just believe in yourself and stand up for yourself even when everybody is looking down on you.โ
Banda also shared the motivation behind her journey, highlighting the importance of family, determination and giving back to the community.
โwhat drives me most is my family and the community I come from. I want to give back and inspire the next generation.โ
The conversation also featured inspiring contributions from KCM employees. Sibongile Kanyungu, Head Hydrogeologist at Number 4 Shaft, encouraged young women to pursue their ambitions regardless of their backgrounds.
โdon’t let where you’re coming from limit what you can aspire for. You have to dream big and work hard towards that goal.โ
KCM employee Teresa highlighted the importance of confidence and perseverance when facing professional challenges.
โwhen you’re faced with a challenge, even if you think you can’t manage, just be confident in yourself first. Just keep pushing at it.โ
The engagement highlighted the shared experiences of women working in football and mining, particularly the need for resilience, self-belief, mentorship and determination to overcome challenges.
The visit also allowed the Copper Queens to appreciate the contribution of mining to Zambiaโs economy and the role women play in KCMโs operations.
KCM continues to support Zambiaโs national football teams through its partnership with FAZ, as well as women’s teams at its sponsored clubs in Nampundwe, Konkola and Nchanga. The company has also introduced the KCMโFAZ Cup as part of efforts to strengthen domestic football and expand competitive opportunities.
The engagement forms part of KCMโs wider commitment to employee and community wellbeing, women’s empowerment and the development of Zambian sport.
