South African Midfielder Jayden Adams Dies at 25

South African midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie confirmed on Saturday, describing the news as a devastating loss for South African football.

McKenzie said in a statement that he had learned of Adams’ passing “with profound shock and a heavy heart,” adding that the country had lost “one of its brightest young talents.” The cause of death has not been disclosed, while police in Cape Town confirmed that an investigation has been opened after the body of a 25-year-old man was found in a residence in Schotschekloof.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) also paid tribute, stating that “football has lost one of its own,” while FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed deep sadness and extended condolences to Adams’ family, teammates, and friends.

Adams had been part of South Africa’s squad at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026, featuring in all three group-stage matches as Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 32 for the first time in their history. He did not feature in their knockout defeat against Canada.

Born in Cape Town, Adams rose through the Stellenbosch FC academy, making his professional debut in 2020 and going on to make 139 appearances for the club. He later joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2025, where he won both the domestic Premiership title and the CAF Champions League.

His passing comes shortly after a personal tragedy earlier in the tournament, following the death of his grandmother during South Africa’s group-stage campaign. Despite the emotional setback, he had featured against Czechia, delivering a committed performance for his nation.

Tributes continue to pour in for the young midfielder, remembered for his talent, discipline, and rapid rise in African football.
