Cameroon Knock Out Defending Champions Nigeria From WAFCON 2026

The defending champions Nigeria have been eliminated from the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a narrow 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon in Casablanca on Sunday.

The Indomitable Lionesses produced a disciplined and resilient performance to end Nigeria’s title defence and secure their place in the semi-finals, while also booking their ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Cameroon found the breakthrough in the 19th minute through 20-year-old forward Myriam Maéva Nyadjou, who produced one of the standout moments of the match. The youngster unleashed a powerful long-range strike that flew into the top corner, leaving Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie with no chance.

Nigeria pushed for an equaliser as the match progressed, but Cameroon’s defensive organisation and determination frustrated the Super Falcons. Despite their efforts to find a way back into the contest, the defending champions could not break through and were forced to surrender their continental crown.

The result brings an end to Nigeria’s hopes of retaining the title and guarantees that Morocco 2026 will produce a new WAFCON champion.

For Cameroon, the victory represents another major step in their quest for continental glory, while their qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup adds further significance to the triumph.

The Indomitable Lionesses now turn their attention to the semi-finals, where they will continue their pursuit of a historic WAFCON title.
