Health & Fitness Key to Productivity and Growth, Says Zambia’s Sports Minister
The government is doubling down on the message that health and fitness aren’t just personal goals they’re essential for boosting productivity and driving long-term economic growth.
According to Minister of Sport, Youth and Art, Elvis Nkandu, the country’s sports policy is designed to make Zambia one of the most physically active nations in Africa, while using sports as a tool for sustainable development.
His remarks were delivered on his behalf by Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Maambo Haamaundu at the annual Bankers Sports Day.
Nkandu urged bankers to prioritize fitness not just for personal well-being, but for better performance at work. He pointed out that the high-pressure, fast-paced financial sector often leads to stress, making wellness programs and sports essential for helping employees stay healthy and balanced.
Meanwhile, Calvin Habasonda from the Zambia Institute of Banking & Finance Services shared that the institute plans to weave wellness awareness into its training programs and professional development courses.
The goal? To help healthy habits spread beyond the workplace and into families and local communities.
Habasonda added that the institute is committed to backing government policy conversations aimed at creating healthier work environments and sustainable productivity across the financial industry.
And Mwindwa Siakalima, Chairperson of the Bankers Association of Zambia, had a simple message for bankers: make exercise a regular habit. “Sports is a great way to stay physically fit and strong,” he said.
