Team Zambia Receives Hero’s Welcome After Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games Campaign
Team Zambia received a warm welcome upon returning home from the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, where the nation’s athletes were celebrated for their dedication, resilience and historic achievements on the international stage.
Welcoming the team, National Olympic Committee/Commonwealth Games Association of Zambia (NOC/CGA Zambia) Vice President Nakaonga Kakoma, delivering a message on behalf of President Alfred Foloko, congratulated the athletes for proudly representing the country. She praised their discipline, commitment and determination throughout the Games, encouraging those who missed out on medals not to be discouraged, reminding them that they remain national heroes whose performances inspired millions of Zambians.
Bronze medallist Catherine Mwape, who etched her name into the history books as the first Zambian woman to win a Commonwealth Games boxing medal, said she travelled to Glasgow with one clear objective to return home with a medal for Zambia.
“My mission was to come back home with a medal, whether bronze, silver, or gold. I am grateful to have achieved that goal. The experience has taught me a lot and has given me valuable exposure to compete against international boxers,” Mwape said.
Her achievement was widely celebrated as one of the country’s standout moments at the Games.
Fellow bronze medallist Emmanuel Katema also described the competition as a valuable learning experience, expressing gratitude for reaching his dream of winning a Commonwealth Games medal.
“I thank God for this medal. The experience I have gained is priceless, and now my focus shifts to preparing for future international competitions,” Katema said.
Government officials also announced that an official ceremony will soon be held to honour Team Zambia and present the medals won during the competition. Special recognition will be given to Catherine Mwape for her groundbreaking achievement in Zambian boxing.
Meanwhile, Team Zambia Head of Delegation Susanna Dakik said the team’s mission had always been to bring home medals, a goal that was successfully achieved. She thanked the athletes, coaches, support staff, government, stakeholders and the Zambian public for their unwavering support throughout the Games.
British High Commission Deputy Commissioner Jason Tran also congratulated Team Zambia, expressing pride in witnessing the athletes’ journey from their departure to Glasgow through to their successful return home.
Zambia was represented by 22 athletes across athletics, boxing, judo, lawn bowls and swimming at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
With valuable international experience gained and historic milestones achieved, Team Zambia now shifts its focus to future competitions, including the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games in Malta.
