Mweemba Urges Nation To Honor Fallen Heroes in Day of Remembrance

FAZ President Keith Mweemba has directed regional offices to take an active role in marking April 28, the day Zambia lost its national football team in the 1993 Gabon Air Disaster off the coast of Libreville.

He explained that April 28 must carry greater national weight.

Mweemba was speaking during the FAZ Eastern Province annual general meeting in Chipata,

He said remembrance should go beyond activities in Lusaka but should also be driven at regional level.

“These were gallant men who died on duty. As a country, we have a responsibility to honor them with the respect they deserve and remain in touch with their families.” Mweemba said.

“This day should not just be any other day. We must change the manner in which we observe it and make it extremely special for this country.” He said.

Mweemba added that while both government and FAZ have continued to mark the occasion, more needs to be done to widen participation.

“That day must be respected at the highest level. We lost an entire national team, but we rose again as a country.” Mweemba said.
