Perry Mutapa Named Zambia U-20 Head Coach
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed Chipolopolo legend and Green Eagles head coach Perry Mutapa as the new Zambia Under-20 Men’s National Team head coach ahead of next month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tournament.
Mutapa, who recently served as an assistant coach with the senior men’s national team during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, succeeds Boyd Mulwanda, whose last assignment was the 2025 U-20 AFCON in Egypt.
He will be assisted by Sipho Mumbi as first assistant coach, Lameck Banda as second assistant coach and Masautso Tembo as strikers’ coach. The technical bench also includes Mike Songwe Siame (goalkeeper coach), Donashano Malama (physical coach), Zani William Phiri (video analyst), Mangulenje Mvula (team manager), Dr. Muyunda Mukubesa (team doctor), Abraham Banda (physiotherapist), Emmanuel Mbola (equipment manager), Joseph Chanda (security manager) and 2012 AFCON winner James Chamanga, who has been named team ambassador.
FAZ General Secretary Charles Chakatazya said the appointments are part of the association’s efforts to revive the Under-20 programme, with the immediate priority being the AFCON zonal qualifiers scheduled to take place in Mauritius from September 18 to 27.
Chakatazya said the new technical bench has been tasked with qualifying Zambia for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and ultimately the FIFA U-20 World Cup, adding that the association wants to restore the success enjoyed by the 2017 generation that won the continental title and reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
He also noted that the inclusion of several former Chipolopolo stars is intended to inspire the next generation of players and help them compete for honours on the continental and global stage.
