New Pride forward Barbra Banda brings Zambian flair to Orlando

Just a few days into her time in Orlando, Barbra Banda already feels like she belongs. The Zambian international received a warm welcome from fans at Orlando International Airport, marking the start of her journey with the Orlando Pride in Florida.

“I was so happy and excited,” said Banda. “I didn’t expect that, but I think it was one very good welcome for me. I appreciate the fans and the support that came to the airport, and we appreciate that. I think I should see those supporters more often in the stadium.”

Although Banda officially signed with the Pride over a month ago, her recent arrival follows her success in helping Zambia qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she scored two crucial goals. She is now eager to make her mark in the NWSL after a positive start with her new team.

“It was very exciting,” she said. “The team, everyone is friendly, very welcoming, and I very much felt at home. I think I’m here for the purpose, for a reason, I’m here to work together with the team.”

After her first training session with the Pride, Banda is preparing for her debut against the San Diego Wave. She believes the NWSL is a strong and competitive league that will help her improve as a player.

“I think the league is quite good. I’ve been following it from way back,” she said. “I think it’s a very interesting league, very strong. All the teams are very physical, fast. So I think it’s good for myself to improve.”

From a tactical standpoint, Banda’s arrival is seen as a significant boost for the Pride, who have struggled to convert chances this season. Her goal-scoring prowess could be the missing piece to their puzzle.

“This move for Banda looks to be a mutually beneficial one for both sides not only on the pitch but off it,” said Pride VP of Soccer Operations and General Manager Haley Carter. “The Pride get a clinical goal scorer and Banda gets an opportunity to show her skills on a bigger stage.”

Carter also emphasized the importance of showcasing Banda’s talent on a global scale, highlighting her potential to be a consistent presence in the FIFA Best 11.

“We’re happy to be able to bring Barbra to the NWSL, so the entire world can see her consistently week in and week out and the amazing things that she can do. She is a special one-of-a-kind talent,” Carter said.

Overall, Banda’s move to Orlando represents a significant step forward in her career, offering her the platform to shine in one of the world’s most competitive women’s soccer leagues.
