Explanation for Clatous Chota Chama’s Omission
Chipolopolo coach Avram Grant provided insight into the absence of Tanzania-based midfielder Clatous Chota Chama from his provisional squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Morocco and Tanzania.
During a press conference held at Football House on Monday afternoon, Grant expressed regret over Chama’s exclusion, citing his recent return to training following an injury.
The Simba SC midfielder, along with Saudi Arabia-based Fashion Sakala, were notable omissions from the squad.
Additionally, Grant disclosed that Red Arrows captain Benedict Chepeshi was sidelined due to injury, explaining his absence from the team.
Regarding the squad selection, Grant clarified that it was not final, revealing plans to travel to Morocco with 23 players.
He emphasized the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Chama’s situation, praising his performance in the Malawi tournament and highlighting his previous nomination as captain for a game.
Recently, Grant announced a 27-member provisional squad, which will convene later in the week to commence preparations.
Currently, Zambia holds the second position in Group E, securing a 4-2 victory over Congo Brazzaville on Match Day 1 but suffering a 2-1 defeat to Niger on Match Day 2.
Qualification for the FIFA World Cup™ 2026 entails the group winners earning automatic berths, while the four best runners-up will participate in a CAF Play-Off tournament.
The winner of the CAF Play-Off Tournament will advance to the FIFA Play-off Tournament.
