Zesco United’s Midfielder ‘Mwape Mwelwa’ Retires from Football
ZESCO United’s midfielder Mwape Mwelwa has retired from football and he spent over 8-years at the club.
Mwelwa was among the few remaining old knights at ZESCO United who have heavily contributed immensely to the rise of the club from its ashes to becoming the country’s dominant force in the game.
In his early and youthful years, Mwelwa was feared for his combination of power and speed, making him a menace to opposing teams.
It was particularly his ability to pump forward pin point crosses that proved a nightmare to opposing defenders and a delight to ZESCO United’s forwards.
The 36-year-old midfielder joins the likes of Kondwani Mtonga and Jacob Banda who hang up their boots during last season’s league campaign.
Mwelwa will cherish his last playing days at the club especially after having helped ZESCO United win their 9th league title last season.
Meanwhile ZESCO United Chief Executive Officer, Richard Kabwe Mulenga has described Mwelwa as a true servant of the club.
“He has been a special, loyal servant of this football club. Mwelwa sits in the same class as Jacob Banda and Kondwani Mtonga; veterans who have been instrumental in the growth of the club. We will forever be grateful for what he did here and what we achieved together.”
