Bruce Mwape Roars: ‘I Prefer a Zambian Coach Over Foreign Help’

Bruce Mwape, coach of the Copper Queens, expressed puzzlement over criticism questioning his tactical abilities, despite his significant achievements in women’s football on the continent.

Since taking charge of the national team six years ago, Mwape has consistently led them to every major tournament.

Under his guidance, the Copper Queens have qualified for three Women’s African Cup of Nations (2018, 2022, & 2024), two Olympics (2020, 2024), and the Women’s World Cup (2023), along with winning the Cosafa Women’s Cup.

However, debates persist about his tactical approach, prompting the Football Association of Zambia to enlist American Lisa Cole as Technical Director and Avram Grant, former Chelsea manager now leading the Zambian men’s national team, for additional support ahead of the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia/New Zealand. Despite a notable victory over Germany before the tournament, critics continue to question Mwape’s tactics.

“People say we lack good tactics, but I still don’t understand what they mean,” Mwape commented. “If it means seeking assistance, we have qualified Zambian coaches whom I would prefer to help us tactically.”

Given the investment in Cole’s expertise compared to the team’s performance in New Zealand, Mwape’s perspective carries weight.

He has finalized his squad for the Paris 2024 Olympics, where Zambia will compete in a challenging group alongside USA, Germany, and Australia.
