Zambia’s U17 Women’s Team Advances to Final Round of World Cup Qualifiers
Amidst a gripping encounter, Zambia’s U17 Women’s National Team, the Copper Princesses, clinched a berth in the fourth and final round of the U17 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers. Despite a 1-0 loss to Uganda in the second-leg match, the Copper Princesses secured their advancement with a 2-1 aggregate scoreline, having won the first leg 2-0 at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.
The match against Uganda witnessed Sylvia Kabene’s 73rd-minute goal, injecting tension into the game. However, Zambia’s resilient defense and strategic gameplay ensured they maintained their aggregate lead, withstanding Uganda’s relentless offensive efforts.
Nevertheless, controversy marred the match, with Uganda contesting a disallowed goal from the first leg and intending to file a complaint with FIFA. The disputed goal’s exclusion, based on the utilization of the big screen at Heroes Stadium, has stirred debate over compliance with FIFA regulations.
Despite the contentious circumstances, Zambia emerged triumphant, earning praise from the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) for their commendable performance. FAZ highlighted the team’s endurance, having played over 101 minutes of competitive football during the intense second-leg encounter.
Looking ahead, Zambia’s Copper Princesses are poised to face either Morocco or Algeria in the final round of qualifiers. As they continue their journey towards the U17 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the team aims to maintain its momentum and secure a coveted spot in the prestigious tournament.
