Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga Wins Consecutive Gyulai István Memorial 400m Titles

Zambian sprint sensation Muzala Samukonga has once again demonstrated why he ranks among the world’s elite 400m athletes after successfully defending his title at the Gyulai István Memorial Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix in Budapest, Hungary.

Samukonga powered to victory in a time of 44.02 seconds on 14 July 2026, improving on the 44.11 seconds he recorded to win the same event in 2025. The impressive performance saw the Olympic bronze medallist secure back-to-back titles at one of Europe’s most prestigious athletics meetings.

The Gyulai István Memorial is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold, the highest level of competition outside the Diamond League. The annual event attracts Olympic champions, world champions, and some of the fastest athletes from around the globe.

By successfully defending his crown, Samukonga further strengthened his standing in the World Athletics rankings ahead of upcoming major international competitions.

The victory is another significant milestone in the Zambian star’s career as he continues to represent the nation with distinction on the international stage, cementing his place among the world’s leading 400m runners.
