Zambia Premier League Warns Against Hooliganism and Unsportsmanlike Conduct
The Zambia Premier League (ZPL) has raised serious concerns about the rising incidents of hooliganism and unsportsmanlike behavior disrupting league matches, emphasizing the urgent need for action to maintain order and safety.
Recent instances include fans throwing missiles during the Week 15 Kitwe Derby between Power Dynamos and Nkana FC at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium. Similar disruptions were reported in the Week 17 clashes between Kabwe Warriors and Nkana at Railway Stadium, as well as Atletico Lusaka versus Zesco United at Nkoloma Stadium, where misconduct by fans endangered lives and interrupted games.
ZPL Chairman Kephas Katongo has assured stakeholders of a thorough investigation into these incidents, vowing decisive measures to protect the league’s integrity. “We are committed to ensuring a safe and fair environment for everyone involved in our matches,” Katongo stated.
He urged stadium security personnel to enforce stricter regulations, highlighting that acts of hooliganism bordering on criminal behavior will not go unpunished. Katongo also reiterated that selling beer in bottles is prohibited in stadiums due to safety concerns.
Addressing the role of match officials, Katongo reminded referees of their duty to uphold fairness, warning that any found guilty of misconduct would face disciplinary action.
The ZPL’s firm stance aims to safeguard the spirit of the game, ensuring that Zambian football continues to thrive in a secure and professional environment.
