Zambia Honors Sporting Excellence at National Sports Awards Ceremony

 

On April 16, 2024, the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Zambia was abuzz with excitement as the nation gathered to celebrate its exceptional athletes and contributors to sports. The prestigious National Sports Awards ceremony, graced by esteemed guests including Minister of Sports and Arts, Mr. Elvis Nkandu, and Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe, recognized outstanding achievements across various sports disciplines.

Minister Nkandu reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to sports development, lauding the remarkable accomplishments of Zambian athletes and emphasizing the support extended to sports federations and associations. Special recognition was given to Rachel Kundananji and Barbra Banda for their invaluable contributions to women’s football on the global stage.

A groundbreaking initiative to sponsor sports events in schools nationwide was announced, with Zanaco Bank stepping up to support the endeavor. Minister Nkandu stressed the importance of nurturing talent at grassroots levels, highlighting the initiation of sports programs in schools to cultivate top-tier players.

The ceremony honored exemplary individuals across diverse categories, including athletes, coaches, administrators, and journalists. Notable awardees included Patrick ‘Baddo’ Chinyemba for Sportsman of the Year, the Zambian Boxing Federation for Federation of the Year, and Martha Sichone for Sports Administrator. The event also recognized the achievements of differently-abled athletes, underscoring inclusivity in sports.

Cultural performances and musical acts by renowned artists like Mampi and Tripple M Legendary General Ozi added to the festive atmosphere of the ceremony, making it a memorable occasion for all attendees.
