In a thrilling showdown for the bronze medal at the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams once again proved his mettle by saving two crucial penalties, securing a 6-5 shootout victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The intense match at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan ended in a goalless stalemate after 90 minutes, setting the stage for a dramatic penalty shootout. Williams, already hailed as a hero for his remarkable performance against Cape Verde in the quarterfinals, rose to the occasion yet again.

With the shootout deadlocked at 4-4 and the bronze medal hanging in the balance, Congolese captain Chancel Mbemba stepped up to take the fifth penalty for his team. Williams, displaying remarkable composure, dived to his right and made a crucial save, keeping South Africa’s hopes alive.

Despite an early miss from Teboho Mokoena in the shootout, Williams made another spectacular save from Elia’s penalty, sealing the 6-5 victory and clinching South Africa’s first bronze medal since 2000.
