Patrice Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has expressed strong confidence that the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be a showcase of excellence for African football. During the official opening of the tournament, Motsepe conveyed his gratitude to the president of Cote d’Ivoire, highlighting the latter’s passion for both football and the African continent.
Motsepe emphasized Africa’s pivotal role in consistently producing some of the world’s best football players, citing the rich talent and spirit inherent in the beautiful game.
“We are gathered here to celebrate African football, and AFCON 2023 is poised to be the ultimate showcase of the talent and spirit defining our beautiful game. My sincere thanks to the president of Cote d’Ivoire for his unwavering commitment to football and his dedication to ensuring the success of this tournament,” declared Motsepe.
With these sentiments, Motsepe officially declared the TotalEnergies AFCON 2023 open.
In the opening match between Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea Bissau, the former secured a 2-0 victory. The match featured an early goal within the first four minutes, with Fofana’s goal being the inaugural goal of the tournament, setting the stage for a promising and thrilling competition ahead.
