Mabedi Warns of Malawi’s Imminent Dominance in Soccer
Malawi National Team head coach Patrick Mabedi expressed contentment with his team’s performance against Tunisia, despite a 1-0 defeat at home in the recent World Cup Qualifiers.
This marks Mabedi’s first loss in open play within the 10 games he has overseen for the Flames of Malawi since taking over from Mario Marinica earlier this year.
The match remained fiercely contested until the 87th minute when Malawi conceded a penalty after striker Sayfallah Ltaief was fouled by defender Lawrence Chaziya.
Tunisia’s Captain Youssef Msakni capitalized on the opportunity, securing the visitors a lead that ultimately earned them maximum points.
Notwithstanding the loss, Coach Mabedi commended his team, stating, “Yes, I should be proud of them. We played according to our game plan, with our challenge being to penetrate closed spaces.
In the final minutes, we lost concentration and, regrettably, gave away a penalty that we could have avoided. Nevertheless, I am optimistic; soon, this same team will start dominating against other teams.”
Tunisia’s coach, Jalal Gaderi, acknowledged the challenge they anticipated from Malawi and credited experience for their victory.
“You can see that we dominated the entire game, but scoring proved to be a challenge. We have respect for Malawi; it is a good team, but on that day, we were the better side,” he remarked.
As the standings in Group H reveal, Tunisia leads with 6 points, followed closely by Equatorial Guinea with the same points. Namibia holds the third spot, while Malawi shares the fourth position with the same points.
Liberia and Sao Tome occupy the fifth and lowest positions in the group, respectively.
