Gift Chola Set to Become Zambia’s First Internationally Classified Female Para-Powerlifter
Para-powerlifting athlete Gift Chola and her coach, Amon Moyo, have arrived in Birmingham, England, to participate in the 2024 GAPS Global Training Camp. This prestigious event, organized by the Commonwealth Games Federation in collaboration with the University of Birmingham, UK Sport, and Griffith University, runs from June 8 to June 18.
During the camp, Gift Chola will undergo her official classification as a para-powerlifting athlete. This significant milestone follows her selection by the Commonwealth Games Association of Zambia, with support from the National Paralympic Committee of Zambia, which submitted her application to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
Upon successfully completing the camp, Gift Chola will become Zambia’s first internationally classified female para-powerlifting athlete, setting the stage for her to compete in international events. This achievement is a testament to her dedication and the growing support for para-sports in Zambia.
The GAPS program, established in 2017, aims to enhance the skills and opportunities for para-athletes and coaches across the Commonwealth. This year’s camp includes representatives from 21 Commonwealth nations, all of whom have their expenses covered by the Commonwealth Games Federation.
Gift Chola’s journey to Birmingham and her impending international classification mark a significant step forward for para-sports in Zambia, offering inspiration to many aspiring athletes and highlighting the importance of inclusive sporting opportunities.
