FAZ Upgrades Refereeing With Modern Communication Systems for League Matches
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) wishes to inform its members and stakeholders that it has procured modern referees’ communication systems for use in the MTN Super League and National Division One, starting this week.
FAZ General Secretary Charles Chakatazya said the purchase is a fulfilment of a commitment made by FAZ President Keith Mweemba during his first address to referees at an Elite Referees’ Course last year.
Chakatazya said the procured equipment included wireless transceivers units, headsets, charging units, among others which are essential for match officials.
“Members of the football family may recall that the FAZ President, Mr Keith Mweemba, last year, during his first address to the referees, lamented the lack of communication systems and pledged to provide the devices. This is where we are now. The President promised, and he has delivered,” Chakatazya said.

He said the communication system would improve officiating by allowing referees to make real-time decisions and quickly confirm fouls, penalties and other violations without disrupting the flow of the game.
The General Secretary explained that the initiative is meant to improve communication, coordination and teamwork among match official; which will ultimately enhance the quality and efficiency of match officiating.
“There have been complaints about errors in officiating because referees are humans who are prone to making mistakes. But these communication systems will be key in reducing such errors as the equipment will now provide quick verbal check-ins, which are critical in covering blind spots, clarifying close calls and preventing costly misjudgments,” he said.
Chakatazya confirmed that the equipment would be used during this week’s MTN Super League Week Six fixtures of the 2026 Transitional Season, including the Kitwe derby between Power Dynamos and Nkana.
He said the FAZ Referees Department has since been tasked to immediately put in place the necessary arrangements to ensure that all officials handling matches in the Super League and National Division One have access to the equipment.
