FAZ President Andrew Kamanga Arrested for Alleged Government Fraud
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President, Andrew Kamanga, has been arrested by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) on suspicion of defrauding the government. Kamanga, a prominent figure in Zambian football administration, was apprehended alongside FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga and two other football administrators, Jairous Siame and Madalitso Kamanga.
According to the DEC, the investigation revealed that the suspects obtained K341,902.00 from the Government of the Republic of Zambia under false pretenses. This money was purportedly allocated as allowances for Madalitso Kamanga and Jairous Siame to attend the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). However, it was discovered that neither Madalitso Kamanga nor Jairous Siame held official positions within FAZ.
The funds were disbursed into their personal accounts, with each receiving K170,951.00, along with return tickets valued at K99,980.00. The fraudulent activity took place between January 1st and February 15th, 2024, coinciding with the dates of the AFCON held in Ivory Coast from January 13th to February 11th, 2024.
The suspects are facing charges including obtaining money by false pretense, obtaining pecuniary advantage by false pretense, and conspiracy to defraud. They are currently finalizing bond processes and will appear in court soon.
DEC Assistant Public Relations Officer, Sydney Katongo, emphasized the commission’s commitment to combating money laundering offenses in Zambia. The joint charges against FAZ officials and associated individuals demonstrate the DEC’s dedication to upholding the law and preserving the integrity of financial systems.
