Everton Shocks Newcastle, Escapes Premier League Relegation Zone
Everton successfully climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone despite facing a 10-point deduction. They secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Newcastle on Thursday, with goals contributed by Dwight McNeil, Abdoulaye Doucoure, and Beto.
Motivated by what they perceived as an unjust sporting penalty, the Toffees showcased resilience. Newcastle, burdened by injuries and fatigue, succumbed to two uncharacteristic errors by England international Kieran Trippier in the latter stages of the game.
McNeil capitalized on a defensive lapse, smashing the ball into the top corner 11 minutes from full time. Doucoure sealed the win, marking Everton’s fifth victory in seven games. Substitute Beto capped off the triumph with his inaugural Premier League goal during stoppage time.
Despite the points deduction, Everton now stands one point clear of the relegation zone. Their position would be even higher if not for the imposed penalty. Newcastle remains in seventh place, trailing by four points for a spot in the top four.
While Everton fans’ frustration over the deduction has somewhat diminished since their last home game against Manchester United, where protests were held, a demonstration occurred in the 10th minute of the match. Supporters held up placards featuring the Premier League logo alongside the message: “Protecting the few, not the many.”
Although Sean Dyche’s team could have enjoyed a more substantial turnaround, their inability to convert opportunities at Goodison proved limiting. The only home win for Everton in the Premier League since March was against Bournemouth.
Dyche lamented his team’s lack of efficiency in front of goal after a positive first-half performance yielded no rewards. Despite defeating Nottingham Forest 1-0 with a winning goal from McNeil just days earlier, Everton struggled to capitalize on chances.
Notably, Newcastle’s impressive home victories against Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United contrasted sharply with their away form. Eddie Howe’s men have secured just one away win in the Premier League this season.
In the first half, Alexander Isak missed a golden opportunity, heading wide when unmarked at the back post. Anthony Gordon, facing a chilly reception on his return to Goodison, squandered chances, firing straight at Jordan Pickford and missing the target from Isak’s through ball.
Trippier, enduring Newcastle’s injury crisis, has played nearly every minute in both the Premier League and Champions League campaigns. Fatigue played a role as he conceded possession, allowing McNeil to capitalize with a remarkable strike past stand-in goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Trippier’s struggles continued as he gifted possession to Jack Harrison, leading to Doucoure’s goal. Beto completed Everton’s exceptional night, displaying strength and composure to coolly finish through Dubravka’s legs for his first goal at Goodison.
