Congo Takes Matters to CAS Following CAF Lifting of Suspension Handed to Morocco Coach Walid Regragui
The Congolese soccer federation is escalating the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) lifted a suspension on Morocco coach Walid Regragui. Initially banned for four games, with two suspended, for his role in a post-match altercation with Congo on January 21st, Regragui was allowed to return for Morocco’s last-16 clash with South Africa after the CAF appeal board partially reversed the decision.
Congo is strongly protesting the decision, deeming it “totally unjustified.” In a statement, the federation pointed to clear footage of the disturbances and Regragui’s “detailed confessions” as evidence of his responsibility for the incident. They are seeking justice and a reconsideration of the decision.
On the other hand, the Moroccan federation argued that the initial ban was unfair, contending that Regragui “did not commit any behavior that violates the spirit of sportsmanship.” They claimed that the coach was defending himself after being provoked by Congo captain Chancel Mbemba.
The clash between Regragui and Mbemba occurred after their match ended in a 1-1 draw, leading to a brawl involving players and officials from both teams. The coach denied making any racist comments, while Mbemba claimed that Regragui insulted him. The incident took a dark turn when Mbemba received racist abuse on social media, and Regragui reportedly faced death threats.
With Congo appealing to CAS, the legal battle adds complexity to the already tense relationship between the two nations. The court’s decision could have implications not only for the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations but also for future interactions between Congo and Morocco.
