CAF President Warns Federations with Poor Infrastructure: “We’re Paying Them

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has issued a stern warning to football associations across Africa, urging them to prioritize the improvement of infrastructure on the continent. In a recent statement, Motsepe emphasized the importance of maintaining professional standards, urging individuals not to mock or ignore poorly maintained stadiums, but rather to report such issues to the appropriate authorities.

Motsepe highlighted CAF’s financial support for member federations, emphasizing that funds provided are intended to enhance infrastructure and the quality of life for African-based footballers. For instance, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is set to receive $400,000 from CAF this year, in addition to other grants from FIFA. Additionally, FAZ will receive approximately $700,000 from CAF for their third-place finish at the recent Africa Cup of Nations.

Motsepe stressed CAF’s commitment to taking decisive action against those who obstruct progress in African football, stating that penalties would be imposed when necessary. He emphasized the importance of leadership, likening the role of football administrators to that of a school principal. According to Motsepe, just as a careless principal would hinder the academic performance of students, a negligent football administrator would impede the development of players and the sport as a whole.

In conclusion, Motsepe expressed CAF’s willingness to endure criticism if it ultimately benefits African football and its players. He called for accountability, urging stakeholders to hold selfish individuals accountable for their actions, as they ultimately undermine the progress of football in their respective countries.
