Barbra Banda Pumped Up for Tri-Nation Friendly Tournament

Zambia Women’s National Team captain Barbra Banda says the Copper Queens are fully focused as they gear up to face Botswana in their opening match of a three-nation friendly series in South Africa.
The team will take on the Mares on Saturday, 31 May, at Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe Stadium, before clashing with hosts South Africa on Tuesday, 3 June.
Banda, who has rejoined the squad, expressed her excitement as Zambia intensifies preparations for the upcoming TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco this July.
“It’s a great feeling being back with the team. Representing our country and Africa is always an honor,” said the Orlando Pride striker.
The FIFA international window provides a crucial opportunity for the Copper Queens to test their strength against two strong opponents. Botswana, their first challenge, recently pushed reigning WAFCON champions South Africa to the limit in a narrow 3-2 defeat.
“It’s going to be a tight game. Botswana is a very good side, and every team has improved. These friendlies are key for our WAFCON preparations,” Banda added.
With both Botswana and South Africa also set to compete in Morocco, Banda believes the series offers a perfect gauge of Zambia’s readiness for the continental showdown.
“Playing against top teams like Botswana and South Africa is ideal—they have quality players, and it’s a great tournament for us. I always want to challenge myself against the best.”
Facing Banyana Banyana, the defending WAFCON champions, will be another major test—one Banda eagerly anticipates.
“South Africa are the best, and I love playing against the best because it helps me grow. It’s going to be a great match,” she said.
The Copper Queens will look to make a statement in Pretoria as they fine-tune their squad ahead of July’s tournament.
