Zambia Welcomes Mercy Zulu and Gloria Sambumba as Certified Video Assistant Referees (VAR)
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is thrilled to announce a significant milestone in Zambian football refereeing. Two more Zambian women referees, Mercy Zulu and Gloria Sambumba, have achieved certification as Video Assistant Referees (VAR), marking a momentous achievement for women in the sport.
This achievement was made possible through the support and training provided by the regional football body, COSAFA. COSAFA’s initiative aimed at enhancing VAR capabilities in the region has yielded exceptional results, with Mercy and Gloria now joining the ranks of certified VAR officials.
The certification of these two talented referees is a testament to the growing presence and influence of women in football officiating. Their dedication, commitment, and passion for the game have led to their successful completion of the VAR training program.
This noteworthy accomplishment follows the participation of FIFA assistant referee Diana Chikotesha in an all-female training course for referees. The commitment to empowering and advancing women in football officiating is evident, and it paves the way for increased diversity and inclusivity in the sport.
FAZ extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mercy Zulu and Gloria Sambumba and looks forward to their valuable contributions as VAR officials in the world of football. Their success is a source of inspiration for aspiring referees, particularly women, and underscores the importance of continued support for referee development in Zambia.
