Sundowns widen lead; Chiefs and Pirates stumble.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ DStv Diski Challenge squad is emerging as a formidable contender this season. Despite the early stage, the Young Brazilians are gaining momentum in the reserve league and pose a significant threat to their rivals.
With seven matches played, Sundowns remains undefeated in the league, following the footsteps of their senior team, renowned in the DStv Premiership. In their recent fixture, the Young Brazilians convincingly defeated Polokwane City 5-2, creating a three-point lead over second-placed Orlando Pirates.
Sundowns had a somewhat rocky start, with initial draws against SuperSport United and Golden Arrows. However, their coach, Themba Badela, seems to have discovered the winning formula, as the team has secured five consecutive victories.
Their impressive streak propelled them to the top, toppling Kaizer Chiefs last weekend. On Saturday, they widened the lead by three points after both Chiefs and Pirates dropped points.
Mzwekhaya Nkonxeni, Kutlwano Letlhaku, Onele Rulwana, Keabetswe Ramotsei, and Pule Manya all contributed to the scoring as they overwhelmed Polokwane City. Meanwhile, the Soweto giants, Chiefs and Pirates, both settled for draws, allowing Sundowns to increase their lead.
Chiefs drew 1-1 against Moroka Swallows, while Pirates had a similar one-all draw against Sekhukhune United. Pirates currently hold the second spot on the leaderboard with 14 points, tied with third-placed Chiefs, only separated by goal difference.
Sekhukhune United, impressively undefeated this season, occupies the fourth position with 13 points.
