Government Calls for Overhaul of Copper Queens’ Technical Bench After Disappointing Olympic Performance

Following a disappointing performance at the 2024 Olympic Games, where the Copper Queens, Zambia’s national women’s football team, were eliminated in the group stage after losing all three games, the Zambian government has called for a comprehensive review of the team’s technical staff. Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu emphasized the need for a thorough overhaul, pointing to the team’s early exit as a sign that changes are necessary.

Nkandu stressed that the current coaching staff must be replaced to bring in fresh perspectives and expertise that can elevate the team’s performance. He highlighted the need for improvements across various areas, including the midfield, defense, and goalkeeping departments, suggesting that the recruitment of better players is essential to strengthen these positions.

While acknowledging the progress made since the team’s previous Olympic campaign in Tokyo, Nkandu noted that significant work remains to be done to achieve success on the global stage. With the next Olympic Games four years away, there is a growing urgency to build a more competitive squad capable of challenging the world’s best teams.

The call for a revision of the technical bench and an emphasis on player development underscores the government’s commitment to investing in women’s football and ensuring that the Copper Queens can compete at the highest levels.
