ZESCO United Goalkeeper Ian Otieno Signs New Deal with South African Club Richards Bay
Kenyan international goalkeeper Ian Otieno, formerly of ZESCO United, is set to embark on a new chapter in his career with Richards Bay, having signed a two-year contract. Otieno will leave the MTN Super League after a successful season with ZESCO, where the team finished second.
Richards Bay, founded in 2017 and a Premier Soccer League team based in South Africa, is looking to bolster their goalkeeping unit with the acquisition of Otieno from the Zambian powerhouse known as Zegamambo. The team finished the 2023–2024 season ranked 15th, with 30 points from 30 games.
The 30-year-old Otieno will replace Jackson Mabokgwane, who recently departed from Richards Bay. Otieno, a former AFC Leopards star, joined ZESCO in 2020 and won the Zambian Super League title in the 2020/21 season.
In addition to his club achievements, Otieno represented Kenya in a four-nation tournament held in Malawi in March. He was also part of the ZESCO team that competed against Royal AM in the 2022–2023 CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
Richards Bay is optimistic that Otieno’s experience and skills will significantly enhance their squad as they prepare for the upcoming season.
