Five Keepers, Three Spots: Intense Battle Ahead
Five Keepers, Three Spots: Intense Battle Ahead
Chipolopolo Boys coach Avram Grant is poised to exclude two goalkeepers from the squad for their upcoming match against Morocco in Agadir on Friday, with kickoff scheduled for 21:00.
Zesco United’s Toaster Nsabata, the team’s second-choice goalkeeper, is expected to make the journey due to his significant experience. Alongside him, Power Dynamos’ Lawrence Mulenga is likely to join the squad.
The competition for the third-choice goalkeeper position is particularly intriguing. Initially, Red Arrows’ Charles Kalumba was expected to compete against Nchanga Rangers’ skipper Victor Chabu.
However, the late inclusion of Francis Mwansa has added a new dynamic to the selection process.
Despite being the second choice at Green Buffaloes, Mwansa appears to have caught the attention of the national team selectors.
The 22-year-old was part of the squad for the African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, although he was later dropped for the March internationals.
Chabu could also be considered a wildcard, especially after his standout performances in the Absa Cup, where he won two Man of the Match awards, including in a penalty shootout win over Nsabata’s Zesco United.
The goalkeepers in camp are:
- Toaster Nsabata – Zesco United
- Lawrence Mulenga – Power Dynamos
- Francis Mwansa – Green Buffaloes
- Charles Kalumba – Red Arrows
- Victor Chabu – Nchanga Rangers
