Copper Princesses Return Home from Successful Uganda Mission

The Zambia U17 Women’s National Team, fondly known as the Copper Princesses, received a warm welcome as they returned home after a triumphant campaign in Uganda, securing their place in the final round of the 2024 U17 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

Touching down at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, the team was greeted by a delegation led by Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President Andrew Kamanga, General Secretary Reuben Kamanga, Technical Director Lyson Zulu, and Zambian Premier League Chairperson Kephas Katongo.

President Kamanga lauded the team’s resilience and outstanding performance, particularly in the second stage of qualifiers where they outclassed Tanzania. “On behalf of the FAZ executive committee, we wish to once again congratulate you for the job done. It wasn’t easy, it was a tough game but we managed to secure qualification to the final round,” he remarked.

Highlighting the importance of preparation for the upcoming match against Morocco, Kamanga expressed hopes of organizing an international friendly to further enhance the team’s readiness.

Coach Carol Kanyemba expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from FAZ and the Zambian public, stating, “There has been massive support to the girls and we really appreciate. We want to emulate our senior national team, the girls are geared and want to rewrite the history that was written by the U17.”

Team captain Zangose Blessing Zulu echoed the sentiments of the coach, expressing gratitude for the support received and pledging to give their all in the upcoming match against Morocco. “We thank you for your support, we appreciate and we will work extra hard for our next game against Morocco, we will continue pushing,” Zulu affirmed.

The Copper Princesses are set to face Morocco in the final round of qualifiers in the first week of June. They secured their spot by overcoming Uganda 2-1 and Algeria 8-0 on aggregate, demonstrating their prowess and determination on the field.
