WSL Title Race Heats Up: ZESCO vs. Nkwazi, Buffaloes vs. Assembly; Lusaka Derby and Luyando vs. Kabwe Celtic Await
The competition for the 2023/2024 FAZ Women’s Super Division title is intensifying, with defending champions Green Buffaloes Women’s Football Club facing a strong challenge from Zegalicious, ZESCO Ndola Girls.
ZESCO Ndola Girls currently lead the league with 60 points from 23 games, while Buffaloes are close behind in second place with 58 points and a game in hand. This weekend, both teams will be in action at Nationalist Stadium in a doubleheader that will be broadcast live on TV3 via Topstar.
ZESCO Ndola Girls will kick off the action with an away match against Nkwazi Queens, aiming to extend their impressive 19-match unbeaten run. Nkwazi Queens, on the other hand, will be eager to bounce back from two consecutive winless games. In their previous encounter, ZESCO Ndola Girls secured a convincing 3-0 victory.
Nkwazi Queens will look to their captain, Enelesi Phiri, for inspiration, while ZESCO Ndola Girls boast several influential players such as Marjory Mulenga, Avell Chitundu, Vast Phiri, Penelope Mulubwa, Fridah Kabwe, and captain Melody Kapimpi.
In the second match of the day, Green Buffaloes Women’s Football Club will face National Assembly, seeking to maintain their unbeaten record of 18 wins and 4 draws from 22 games. The defending champions previously defeated National Assembly 2-0.
National Assembly, however, are in good form, having remained unbeaten in their last three matches, including a 3-1 victory over ZISD. Meanwhile, Queens Academy will host Elite Ladies at the ZNS Rugby Ground in Kabwe. Elite Ladies will be buoyed by their recent 3-0 win over YASA Queens.
Indeni Roses will return to action for the first time since the passing of Norin Betani, as they visit North Western Province to take on Trident Queens, aiming to secure a double over the hosts. Green Eagles will host Kamfisa Police Blue Eagles at NASDEC, with Rachel Moono leading the attack in her pursuit of the golden boot, having scored 19 goals so far, second only to Charity Mubanga with 22 goals.
The weekend’s action will continue on Sunday, with ZISD facing Red Arrows, YASA Queens playing against ZANACO Ladies, and Luyando Foundation Girls hosting winless Kabwe Celtic Queens.
