FIFA Announces Elite Talent Development Academy for Zambian Football

Zambian football is poised for a significant boost with FIFA’s announcement of plans to establish an elite talent development academy in the country within the next year. This exciting development emerged from the FIFA Football Summit 2023, where Arsène Wenger, Chief of Global Football Development, unveiled FIFA’s ambitious goal of creating recognized academies in all 211 member associations by 2027.

“Our plan is to open more academies in Africa over the next six months to one year,” Wenger declared. “We are close to opening new ones in Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Ghana, and Zambia. By the end of 2026, we’ll have 75 academies all over the world.”

The FIFA Academy initiative aims to provide every promising player with an opportunity to shine, regardless of their background. To ensure a solid technical foundation, FIFA has deployed 24 coaches to support player identification, with six more set to join in key African nations, including Zambia. These experts will collaborate with full-time local coaches, fostering a sustainable coaching talent pool within the country.

The academy’s curriculum will focus on three key pillars:

  1. Identifying Talented Players: The academy will seek diamonds in the rough, prioritizing talent over financial limitations.
  2. Fostering Technical Excellence: Players will be equipped with the skills to handle any situation on the pitch, emphasizing technical mastery.
  3. Matching Skills with Experience: Opportunities will be provided for players to showcase their learned skills through competitive matches.

Wenger stressed the importance of technical mastery, stating, “We want to develop technically perfect players. No matter what, we want to make the ball your friend… We want to equip players to deal with every situation they will face in football.”

Recognizing the crucial role of education, the academy will incorporate academic subjects alongside football training. This holistic approach ensures that players are not only prepared for success on the pitch but also equipped for success in life beyond football.

Accessibility is paramount for FIFA, with Wenger stating, “We want every talent in the world to go and play football for free… This is a very important criterion for us to get the FIFA Academy label – free access for every single person.” This commitment to inclusivity underscores FIFA’s dedication to nurturing talent and promoting the global growth of football.
