Nigerian Attacker Alex Iwobi Faces Criticism After AFCON Final Loss
Nigerian attacker Alex Iwobi has faced criticism from some of the country’s supporters following the Africa Cup of Nations final against Ivory Coast on Sunday. Nigeria narrowly lost the match 2-1, and a portion of fans have directed their frustration towards Iwobi, holding him responsible for the defeat.
Displeased supporters have taken to Iwobi’s social media accounts to express their dissatisfaction, resorting to online bullying aimed at the 27-year-old international. However, this negative behavior has not gone unnoticed.
Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa and other Nigerians have stepped forward to defend Iwobi, condemning the targeted attacks and highlighting the unfairness of singling out one player for the team’s loss.
Musa, addressing the issue on social media, urged fans to cease the cyber-bullying. “Losing a game is undoubtedly tough, but targeting a single player for the team’s shortcomings is unfair and unjust,” he wrote. “We win as a team, and we lose as a team. Alex gave his all on the field, just like every member of our squad.”
For now, Iwobi has chosen to remain silent on the attacks, but he has taken the step to delete his recent photos from social media.
