Justin Shonga Vows to Work Hard and Return to National Team
Zambian striker Justin Shonga, with 16 goals to his name in national team colors, has expressed his determination not to retire from international football just yet. He drew inspiration from Stoppila Sunzu‘s performance for the Chipolopolo Boys during the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Shonga, 27, made his national team debut in 2017 and played 33 games for Zambia, scoring six times until losing his place in the national team. His last appearance for the Chipolopolo Boys was in 2021. However, watching Sunzu at the AFCON inspired him and made him realize there’s still time for him in international football.
He mentioned examples like Ghanaian international Andrew Ayew, who is still actively playing, as inspiration. Shonga defended the young Chipolopolo squad, stating that most players were making their debut at the tournament. He believes the experience gained will improve their performance in future competitions.
Despite Zambia being eliminated in the group stage of the AFCON, Shonga praised the team for putting up a good fight. He congratulated every player for their efforts and promised to work hard if he gets called back to the national team.
Shonga, who had an impressive campaign last season with Nkwazi Football Club, earning a move to Georgia, expressed his commitment to giving his best for Zambia whenever he gets a call-up.
