Guest Contribution: Thoughtful Open Letter to FAZ Chief Kamanga

I am deeply distressed by the recent group stage elimination of Zambia from AFCON. It seems as though there is an enduring curse on the team, hindering their performance and stifling their ability to score. A conversation with a Pastor friend prompted me to reflect on the troubles that have plagued the Chipolopolo since 2012.

Since that year, the team has faced challenges, failing to qualify for three AFCONS and consistently losing to weaker opponents. The television commentator on SuperSport highlighted that Zambia has not won a game at AFCON since 2012, spanning tournaments in 2013, 2015, and the recent 2024 event.

The solution, I believe, lies in addressing the proverbial elephant in the room. It is crucial for the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to honor their commitment to the 2012 team that won the Africa Cup. Following the divine guidance of Micah 6v8, we are called to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly before God. This includes rectifying the oversight of the 2012 winners not receiving their rightful dues.

While you were not in office during that time, you are now in a position to atone for the failures of past FAZ officials. The players from 2012 have been patiently waiting for what is rightfully theirs, and their grievances have spiritual implications, evident in the team’s consistent struggles since that time.

To break this pattern, it is imperative that FAZ promptly pays the 2012 players what was promised to them, including the funds allocated by CAF. The responsibility falls on the current administration to rectify the past injustices. History has shown that unresolved issues can have profound consequences, and it is essential to heed this call for justice to pave the way for success in future tournaments.

As illustrated in the Bible, acknowledging and addressing past wrongs can lead to positive change. King David’s actions to atone for the sins of his predecessor resulted in the end of an unexplained drought. Similarly, paying the 2012 players is a necessary step to lift the perceived curse and restore glory to the Chipolopolo.

It is my sincere hope that FAZ, under your leadership, will take swift and decisive action to rectify this matter. By doing so, you not only honor the commitment made to the players but also pave the way for Zambia to proudly sing its anthem at the 2026 World Cup in North America.
