Sunzu, Frankie, and Rodrick set to anchor Chipolopolo defense.

The Chipolopolo Boys are set to commence their Africa Cup of Nations journey on Wednesday evening, facing off against DR Congo.

Coach Avram Grant aims to initiate the tournament with a positive outcome, emphasizing the significance of a strong start in this continental showcase. Known for his preference for stability, the former Chelsea boss is expected to maintain consistency in his starting lineup.

Reports from the ZamFoot Crew reveal that Stophila Sunzu, a key figure in Zambia’s 2012 AFCON victory, is slated to anchor the defense. The seasoned defender, renowned for his historic penalty in 2012, is among the three players—alongside captain Lubambo Musonda and vice-captain Rodrick Kabwe—who boast prior AFCON experience.

Sunzu, currently plying his trade in China, brings invaluable experience to the team, a crucial asset on this grand stage where player nerves can come into play. It is anticipated that he will be paired with Frankie Chisenga Musonda, based in Scotland.

While the 26-year-old Musonda missed Zambia’s last four competitive matches, including the October and November international break, he returned to action in the friendly against Cameroon. However, Coach Grant has the option to pair Sunzu with the industrious defender Dominic Chanda from Power Dynamos.

Chanda and Sunzu have previously formed a solid defensive partnership, featuring in four of the last five Chipolopolo games. Additionally, the team has alternatives in young defender Gift Mphande and former Kabwe Warriors player Tandi Mwape.

On the left flank, Rodrick Kabwe is expected to maintain his position as the starting left back, edging out Zephaniah Phiri.

The highly anticipated Group F encounter against DR Congo is scheduled to take place tomorrow at the Laurent Pokou Stadium at 22:00 hours (Zambian Time).
