FAZ Clarifies K55 Million AFCON Budget Covers All Costs Up to Final
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has clarified that the K55 million budget presented to the government for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) covers all costs of the tournament up to the final.
Reuben Kamanga, FAZ General Secretary, expressed confidence in the comprehensive planning, stating that the budget considers all expenses, including the prize money for winning the cup, which amounts to $4.5 million.
Addressing concerns about the budget size, Kamanga explained, “The cost of our investment to get the team to the final is about $2 million, but winning the cup guarantees us $4.5 million. Getting to the final and winning will give us more than a 100 percent return. So, we should always put these things in context.”
He reiterated the Association’s commitment to international tournaments and credited his executive for ensuring that, in the past eight years, no team has been omitted due to financial constraints. Kamanga acknowledged the existence of contingency plans (Plan B or C) but emphasized the importance of making FAZ financially independent to address challenges effectively.
Looking ahead, Kamanga revealed that Chipolopolo would play their first friendly match on January 5, with the opponent yet to be finalized. Another confirmed match against Cameroon is scheduled for January 9, 2024.
