Mekelakeya Secures Leading Position, Bahir Dar City Ascends
Mekelakeya and Bahir Dar City have significantly bolstered their positions in the Ethiopia Premier League title race. Mekelakeya secured a 2-1 victory against Adama, while Bahir Dar triumphed over Hawassa with an identical scoreline.
Due to the postponement of the St. George’s derby with Ethiopia Coffee, the Defence Force maintains its leadership for another week.
Having fiercely contested the title with St. George in the previous season, Bahir Dar is once again emerging as a formidable contender.
In the match against Adama City, Biniam Ayiten put Adama in the lead with a goal in the 49th minute. However, Adama’s advantage was short-lived, as Samuel Saliso equalized in the 63rd minute, followed by Shimeles Bekele securing the winning goal in the 68th minute.
Bahir Dar City showcased a stellar performance led by Cherinet Gugsa, who scored both goals in their 2-1 victory over Hawassa City. Gugsa found the net in the 12th minute, giving Bahir Dar a 1-0 lead, and extended their advantage to 2-0 in the 40th minute. Hawassa City pulled one goal back just before halftime through Tafesse Solomon, with Bahir Dar maintaining a 2-1 lead.
Despite no goals in the second half, Bahir Dar moved to the 3rd position with 14 points, tying with CBE in the second spot. Meanwhile, Hawassa City remains in 8th place, and Adama City, who lost to Mekelakeya, occupies the 6th position with 12 points, the same as 5th-placed Fasil Kenema.
