Spanish Prosecutor Seeks 9-Year Term for Ex-Barcelona Defender Dani Alves
A Spanish prosecutor is pushing for a nine-year prison sentence for former Brazilian and Barcelona defender Dani Alves, who is set to face trial in Spain on charges of alleged sexual assault dating back to last December.
The 40-year-old has been detained since January after being accused of assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub. Initially denying any sexual encounter, Alves later claimed the interaction was consensual.
Alongside the prison term, the prosecutor is also seeking a restraining order for Alves post-incarceration and is requesting him to pay damages totaling 150,000 euros (£130,500) to the alleged victim.
In August, a court in the Barcelona area formally indicted Alves, determining there was sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.
Despite playing for Brazil in the previous year’s World Cup, Alves had his contract with Mexican club UNAM terminated following his arrest.
A trial date for Alves is yet to be established. In Spain, accusations of rape fall under the broader category of sexual assault, with convictions carrying sentences ranging from four to 15 years in prison.
