Haalubono Uses COSAFA Tournament As Key Learning Curve Ahead Of WAFCON
Zambia assistant coach Charles Haalubono reacts to his side defeating Zimbabwe 3-1 in the 3rd/4th place playoff To the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.
COSAFA Women’s Championship ended with the Copper Queens claiming a bronze medal after a 3–1 victory over Zimbabwe in the third-place playoff.
Zambia produced a commanding first-half performance, inspired by a brace from Agness Phiri. The forward struck in the second and 26th minutes to give the Copper Queens early control, before Mercy Chipasula added a third just before the break to cap off a dominant display.
Zimbabwe pulled one back through Rutendo Makore, who capitalised on a defensive lapse, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Zambia comfortably saw out the match.
Assistant coach Charles Haalubono said the podium finish helped restore confidence in camp following the disappointment of missing out on the final.
“Third position is not so bad considering we were coming from a defeat against Namibia. We were devastated by that result. We thank God for the victory today; at least the morale in the camp will now be restored,” said Haalubono.
Zambia had been aiming to defend the title they won in 2024 but fell short this time around. However, Haalubono believes the tournament offered important lessons as the team shifts focus to preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Player of the Match Agness Phiri expressed her delight at earning her first individual accolade at the regional tournament. She credited her teammates for their support and teamwork, which she said played a key role in her performance.
Phiri acknowledged the challenge posed by Zimbabwe but described the third-place finish as a positive way to conclude the campaign as the Copper Queens turn their attention to continental ambitions.
