Copper Queens Stay On Top Despite Tight Draw

Zambia remained top of Group B at the HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA Women’s Championship 2025 following a hard-fought goalless draw with Zimbabwe at Seshego Stadium on Sunday.

The result leaves both sides level on four points after two matches, but the Copper Queens hold the advantage on goal difference.

In a tightly contested affair, the first half saw Zimbabwe come close when Nobukhosi Ncube’s dangerous corner forced a sharp save from goalkeeper Hazel Nali.

Zambia enjoyed spells of controlled possession but lacked precision in the final third. After the break, Zimbabwe applied early pressure, with Rutendo Makore denied by Nali inside the box.

Zambia pushed for a winner late on, with Eneless Phiri firing off target and captain Kabange Mupopo seeing a long-range effort go just over. Agness Phiri came closest to breaking the deadlock, striking the crossbar after being set up by Mupopo.

Speaking after the match, assistant coach Charles Haalubono admitted his side failed to capitalize on clear opportunities, noting two one-on-one chances were squandered.

He praised Zimbabwe’s tactical discipline, acknowledging their ability to disrupt Zambia’s rhythm and deny space in key areas.

Haalubono also commended Zimbabwe goalkeeper Cynthia Shonga, whose standout performance earned her Player of the Match.

Reflecting on Zimbabwe’s progress since last year’s three-nations tournament in Malawi, where Zambia won 3-1, Haalubono credited their improved preparation and tactical approach.

With the final group match against Eswatini on Tuesday, February 24, the technical bench is focused on sharpening the team’s finishing to secure a vital result.
