Zambian Assistant Referee Diana Chikotesha Makes History in AFCON Final
Zambian assistant referee Diana Chikotesha achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first female on-pitch match official to feature in a men’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final. Chikotesha, who honed her skills through various COSAFA tournaments, delivered an impeccable performance as an assistant referee during Ivory Coast’s 2-1 victory over Nigeria in Sunday’s final in Abidjan.
This groundbreaking achievement is likely to open doors for further assignments in men’s football for the 35-year-old official, who has previously officiated at the African Nations Championship finals and the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Joining Chikotesha in the historic moment was Jerson dos Santos from Angola, forming a COSAFA double-act on the pitch, showcasing the region’s excellent match officials. In the VAR room, Maria Rivet from Mauritius contributed to the officiating team.
Dahane Beida from Mauritania served as the referee for the final match, with another female official, Bouchra Karboubi from Morocco, serving as the fourth official. This collective representation underscores the growing diversity and inclusivity in football officiating.
