Foloko Applauds French Embassy’s Grassroots Sports Initiative in Zambia
National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) president Alfred Foloko has praised the French Embassy in Zambia for its outstanding efforts in promoting grassroots sports in the country.
Foloko expressed his gratitude for the Embassy’s initiative to reward young pupils from five schools who participated in the Olympiads organized by the French Embassy and hosted at the OYDC Zambia – Sports Development Centre. He emphasized that such initiatives strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation fostered through sports.
As Zambia prepares to send athletes to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Foloko highlighted the positive impact of these events in inspiring young talents to pursue sports as a career. He proudly announced that Zambia has so far qualified for three sports disciplines: Patrick Chinyemba (boxing), Muzala Samukonga (athletics), and the Copper Queens (football), with more qualifications expected.
And Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis Nkandu, the guest of honor at the awards ceremony, commended the French Embassy for bringing joy and fun to the children through these sporting activities. He noted that these events are part of the celebrations leading up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where Zambia will participate.
Nkandu presented medals to all the young athletes who emerged victorious during the games.
Meanwhile, French Ambassador to Zambia, HE Thomas Rossignol, emphasized the potential of these young athletes as future stars, praising their talent displayed in events such as the 400m race, relays, handball, fun & movement games, and a quiz held on May 31, 2024.
Furthermore, NOCZ Athletes Commission Chairperson Richard Mulenga encouraged those who did not receive rewards to maintain their sporting spirit and continue participating in sports at their respective schools. He also urged them to explore sports opportunities at the OYDC Zambia – Sports Development Centre.
The ceremony in Lusaka saw attendance from various sports association leaders and Ministry officials.
