Equatorial Guinea Suspends Emilio Nsue for ‘Indiscipline’ During Afcon 2023
quatorial Guinea’s football federation has suspended Emilio Nsue, the country’s star striker, indefinitely.
The decision comes after Nsue was allegedly involved in “several episodes of serious indiscipline” during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where he emerged as the top scorer with five goals in four matches, despite Equatorial Guinea being eliminated in the last 16.
Additionally, Iban Salvador, a midfielder for the National Thunder team, has also been suspended. The federation cited an “unpleasant incident” involving the 28-year-old in Abidjan on January 29th, the day after Equatorial Guinea’s 1-0 defeat by Guinea, which resulted in their tournament exit.
The incident reportedly required intervention by Ivorian police and delayed the team’s return home.
Nsue was in Abidjan recently to collect the golden boot award following Ivory Coast’s victory over Nigeria in the Nations Cup final.
The 34-year-old, who has played for clubs like Birmingham City and Middlesbrough, holds the record for the most goals scored for Equatorial Guinea at the international level, with 22 goals to his name.
The National Thunder’s next competitive fixtures are scheduled for June, when they will play two 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
